Benefits Alert 2010-07

In 2004 we prepared an extensive Benefits Alert to explain the changes to the definition of dependent due to the passage of the Working Families Tax Relief Act (WFTRA). Over the past month, I have received requests from several of you to update the original Benefits Alert and the accompanying charts to incorporate the new expanded definition of dependent under PPACA. Ask and you shall receive; however, you may find it is not an easy read like most of our communications. As much as possible I wanted to stay with the statutory language so that nothing was lost in translation. I believe you will find the accompanying charts more user- friendly and hopefully they will provide you with a good finger tip resource when speaking with employees or in preparing communication materials. I suggest that you begin with the charts and then refer back to the text for more detail.
